"Both names [i.e. <i>Athrotaxis laxifolia</i> Hook. and <i>Athrotaxis tetragona</i> Hook.] are based on <i>R.C.Gunn 369</i>, which represents hybrid plants, the parents being <i>A. selaginoides</i> and <i>A. cupressoides</i>. Such hybrid individuals are widespread although not common in areas where the two parent species occur, and the name <i>A. laxifolia</i> has been widely used for these. Gunn's number series referred to his concepts of the species, not to individual collections. Several specimens may consequently bear the same number, and in some cases these may be referable to different species."
