Genus Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849

Type species:
Bothriocephalus coronatum Rudolphi, 1819 (=Acanthobothrium coronatum (Rudolphi, 1819)) by original designation.
Introduction
Jensen & Bullard (2010) proposed a classification scheme of 15 metacestode types/forms, of which eight were genetically matched to known genera. The form then identified as 'Larval Type II (2)', was provided the generic identity of Acanthobothrium. Cutmore et al. (2024) expanded upon the work of Jensen & Bullard (2010), and focused on metacestodes collected from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, which has provided additional genetic data and recognised teleost hosts for the genus.
