Introduction

The Bodotriidae are a relatively large family of 36 genera and 410 species. Fourteen genera and 92 species are known from Australian waters (30 April 2005). Watling (1977) proposed a third subfamily, Mancocumatinae, to add to Bodotriinae Scott, 1901 and Vaunthompsoniinae G.O. Sars, 1878 but this subfamily was synonymised with Vaunthompsoniinae by Haye (2007). Haye (2007) illuminated the phylogenetic relationships among the genera of the Bodotriidae using morphological characters and reviewed the systematics of the family.

The diagnosis was generated from a DELTA database created as part of Crustacea.net by L. Watling & S. Gerken in 2002 and held at the Australian Museum. The monophyly of the family was confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis of Gerken et al. (2021) but not by an earlier study (Haye 2007).

Although Vaunthompsoniinae G.O. Sars, 1878 is an older name than Bodotriidae Scott, 1901 it does not replace the name of the family (ICZN Article 35.5).

Diagnosis

Males are indistinguishable from males of Nannastacidae.

Female. Antenna 2 minute, much smaller than antenna 1, peduncle with 3 articles. Mandibles navicular. Maxilliped 3 exopod present. Pereopod 1 simple or with group of long setae on propodus. Pereopod 3 exopod present, fully developed, rudimentary or absent. Uropod endopod with 1 or with 2 articles. Telson not articulated, fused to last pleonite. (Generated from Watling & Gerken 2002)
