Family CYZICIDAE Stebbing, 1910

Introduction

Members of this family and Eocyzicidae are easily recognised by many distinctive feactures, including valves thick and swollen, more or les oval and with many growth rings and a well developed umbo (Richter & Timms 2005; Schwentner et al., 2020). It has times included one, two, three or four genera (see referenceS below). Schwentner et al. (2020) removed Eocyzicus Daday, 1915 to its own family, leaving only Cyzicus Audouin, 1837 and Ozestheria Schwentner & Richter in Schwentner, Just & Richter, 2015. Cyzicus does not occur in Australia. Diagnoses of the two families (Schwentner et al., 2020) are not comparable. In Australia, cyzicids are recognised by males having a triangular rostrum and posterior trunk segments with several dorsal spines, and eocyzicids by males having a broad hatchet-like rostrum (subrectangular to spatulate) and posterior trunk segments with one dorsal spine (Timms, 2018).
