Introduction

The Gynodiastylidae are a small, mainly Southern Hemisphere, family of 12 genera and 106 species. Eleven genera and 81 species are known from Australian waters (Gerken 2001; 30 April 2025). The diagnosis was generated from a DELTA database created as part of Crustacea.net by L. Watling & S. Gerken in 2002 and held at the Australian Museum.

Diagnosis

Male. Antenna 2 flagellum not extending beyond posterior border of carapace, peduncle with 3 or 4 articles. Mandibles navicular. Pereopod 1 simple, with group of long setae on propodus or with many long setae on dactyl. Pleopods absent. Uropod endopod with 1, 2 or 3 articles. Telson articulated (may be small flap), size variable; anus present, without terminal setae or with 2 terminal setae.

Female. Antenna 2 minute, much smaller than antenna 1, peduncle with 2 articles. Mandibles navicular. Maxilliped 3 exopod absent. Pereopod 1 simple, with group of long setae on propodus or with many long setae on dactyl. Pereopod 3 exopod rudimentary or absent. Uropod endopod with 1, or 2 or 3 articles. Telson articulated (may be small flap).
