Introduction

The Lampropidae are a small, cold-water family of 28 genera and 141 species. The family is distinctive with members easily recognised by having at least three terminal setae on the telson. Two genera and five species are known from Australia and Australian Antarctic waters (30 April 2025).

The diagnosis was generated from a DELTA database created as part of Crustacea.net by L. Watling & S. Gerken in 2002 and held at the Australian Museum. The monophyly of the family was confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis of Gerken et al. (2021).

Diagnosis

Female. Antenna 2 reduced, slightly smaller than antenna 1, peduncle with 4 articles or with 5 articles. Mandibles navicular. Maxilliped 3 exopod present. Pereopod 1 simple. Pereopod 3 exopod rudimentary or absent. Uropod endopod with 3 articles. Telson articulated (may be small flap).
