Introduction

Placement of Ningaui has varied. Strahan (1995) and Van Dyck and Strahan (2008) include the genus in the subfamily Planigalinae, although it has normally been recognised as sister to a Sminthopsis-Antechinomys clade (Archer 1975,1981; Baverstock et al. 1982) or more closely related to Sminthopsis (Blacket et al. 1999, Krajewski & Westerman, 2003). As a result of this relationship, Ningaui has been placed in the subfamily Sminthopsinae (e.g., Marshall et al. 1990, Krajewski et al. 1997), the arrangement followed here.
